Santa Monica-Malibu Education Foundation High School Summer School
(SMMEFHSSS)
June 26th – August 7th, 2008; 8:00am-12:30pm



We are excited to offer students the opportunity to take courses for credit this summer at Santa Monica High School.  These are intensive regular high school academic courses; they are not remediation courses.  A grade will be issued for each class and that grade will be included on the student’s transcript.  It is at the discretion of the receiving school (if other than SMMUSD) to accept or deny course credit.  Please check with your school’s personnel prior to registering.

Rigor:  The SMMEFHSSS classes will be very rigorous.  Students will complete a year curriculum in six (6) weeks.  Students should expect approximately 4 hours of homework each day.  All students will need approval signatures from their current school counselor and principal on the registration application.

Attendance:  Daily attendance is required.  Students who miss more than three (3) days of class will not receive any credit for that class and there will be no refund.  Three (3) tardies will count as one (1) absence for that course.  A grade will be issued at the end of the session and that grade will remain on the student’s transcript.  If the student drops the course by the end of the second week, there will be no grade issued and there will be no refund.

Fees:
  1. There is a tuition fee of $600 for each class which includes a $25.00 non-refundable registration fee.  Students will receive 10 units of credit for a passing grade unless the class is designated as ‘no credit’.  The Jump Start College class fee is $600 for one 10 day session; three (3) Jump Start College sessions will be offered and there will be no credit given for this class.  The Laughlinks Comedy Bootcamp fee is $300 for the 3 week session and 5 units of high school credit will be given.
  2. Refund Policy:  All requests for refunds must be made in writing prior to June 16th.  There will be no refunds after June 16th with the exception of class cancellation.  Requests made prior to June 2nd will receive a 50% refund less the registration fee.  Requests made between June 2nd - June 16th will receive a 25% refund less the registration fee.
  3. Returned Check Charges:  There is a $25 fee for any returned check.
  4. Credit card payments will be charged a $5 processing fee.
  5. Any unpaid fee will remain on the student’s account and the student will not receive credits and/or graduate without payment in full (SMMUSD students).

Financial Assistance:  There are a limited amount of scholarships available to students who qualify for SMMUSD free and reduced-fee lunch.  Please check the appropriate line in the payment section on the registration form.  Scholarships are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.  You will be notified by June 2nd at the latest whether or not you will receive a scholarship. 

Food Service:  SMMUSD Food Services will sell snacks during the class break.

Holidays:  SMMEFHSSS at Samohi will be closed on Friday, July 4th.

Immunizations:  All students who are not SMMUSD students must provide a current record of immunization at the time of enrollment.

Behavior:  We require all students to follow the strict SMMUSD behavior policies in effect during the regular school year.  All SMMUSD policies and consequences will apply.  If you need a copy of these policies, contact us at smmefhsss@smmusd.org.  SMMEFHSSS students will not be allowed off campus at any time during summer school hours.   Any missed days or tardies due to behavior problems will count toward the maximum number of allowable absences as outlined above under “Attendance.”

Supplies:  Textbooks will be provided.  Some classes require a materials fee as noted under “Class Offerings.”  Students are expected to take care of all books and materials issued to them and return them accordingly.  Any lost or damaged books and/or materials will be charged against the student’s account.

PaymentWe accept payment in cash, check, money order and credit card (Visa, MC, Amex).  Credit card payment will include an additional $5.00 charge for processing.  Tuition in full is due at the time of registration and is required in order to complete the student’s class enrollment. 

Transportation:  No transportation is provided.

Class Size:  The minimum number of students in each class is 25 students; the maximum number is 30.  Once a class is full, a waiting list will be kept and you will be notified if we are able to open another class section.   Students will be given their second choice if we are unable to accommodate their first choice.

Class Offerings: Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • Creative Writing
  • Geometry
  • U.S. History
  • World History
  • Laughlinks Comedy Bootcamp – This 3 week class includes Improvisation and Stand Up Comedy, ending in a live performance!  The 5 credits earned are not UC approved but are approved high school elective credits.  Dates:  July 14 - August 1
  • Jump Start College ($10 materials fee) – Students will learn to navigate a college search, complete the UC common application, write a college essay, create a resume of activities and organize a personalized calendar and filing system for tracking their applications.

    June 26 – July 10
    July 11– July 24
    July 25 – August 7

Registration is not complete until all forms are correctly filled out and received with payment in full.
