2007-2008 Academic Enrichment Grant (AEG) Summaries

ADAMS

Lourdes Perez, Meredith Anderson, AVID eMAC Computer: The Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) courses provide students with the skills needed to be successful in advanced English, history, math, science and foreign language.  A computer in the 7th grade classroom would provide more students the opportunity to access technology. This grant will fund an additional classroom computer in the 7th grade AVID classroom.

CABRILLO

Anabella Large, Latino Family Literary Project: This grant will provide staff with the appropriate training and materials needed to help Latino families gain the skills to help their children at home in literacy.  It will allow the school to purchase the appropriate literacy materials to help the school close the achievement gap. The grant will also be used in in servicing at Cabrillo during a Professional Development day.

EDISON

Lorissa Boxer, Sandra Brumer, Rocio Naranjo, Edison E-News: E-News will provide 3rd through 5th students a meaningful, creative outlet in English and Spanish writing and oral language standards.  With the grant, Edison Language Academy 3rd through 5th grade students will plan and produce a bilingual Electronic News Magazine of school and community events.  Edison E-News will be podcast to classrooms.

FRANKLIN

Paula Flynn, Building a Leveled Library with Fiction and Non-fiction Titles:  A strong Reading Workshop is critical to building reading comprehension at any grade level.  In a reading workshop students are reading books at their “just right” level.  The grant for this project will allow the purchase of multiple copies of selected fiction and non-fiction books at a variety of reading levels (3rd -5th grades) with the purpose of enhancing an enriched Reader’s Workshop in the 5th grade classroom.

GRANT

Karen Johnson, Suzanne Peterson & Nancy Lamell, Grant School presidential Readathon: In light of the upcoming presidential election, the school is planning to center the annual readathon on United States presidents.  The Grant Presidential Readathon will help students understand and appreciate reading a variety of fiction and non-fiction books including biographies of United States presidents and first ladies.  The grant will fund the purchase of materials for the project and biographies of United States presidents and first ladies to augment the Grant biography collection.

MCKINLEY

Marc Sanschagrin & Cheyenne Lemmon, Science Enhancement: Given the state’s focus on chemistry and the periodic table of elements in 5th grade, it is important to assist students in identifying the periodic table of elements and their characteristics by providing a hands-on experience.  The grant will be used to purchase The Grand Tour of the Periodic Table in Minerals, four illustrative periodic table posters and 12 beginner microscopes.

MUIR

Sue Beltran, Melissa Herman, Lova Hyatt, & Cary Mullen, Enhancing Memory through Music and Movement: The teachers plan to use an interactive program to enrich and supplement standards-based instruction in reading, writing and musical modalities to assess students in learning numbers, shapes and sight words. The grant will provide teachers with CDs and DVDs of chants.  This would give students tools to apply in authentic reading, writing and mathematic practices.  Students will use their visual, auditory, musical and kinesthetic learning styles to learn number names, color words, math concepts, and sight words required in the state standards in a fun, age-appropriate manner.                   

Elisa Salvaryn, Tools to Improve Student Concentration: Many students have difficulty focusing on the task at hand because of energy levels that are either too high or too low.  The project will purchase a variety of tools such as “wiggle seats” and “fidgets” that help focus vision and hearing modes and reduce distraction.

Lourdes Benitez, Jill Ennis & Susie Edelman, Project Science Library Media: Project Science Library Media is a visual program designed to provide students with adequate instructional resources in the science program.  The grant will create a Video Library that will enhance the 5th grade science curriculum.  Both teachers and students will use the library.  Parents will also be able to view the videos in order to assist their children.                      

ROGERS

Pamela Dresher, The Microscopic World: The goal of this project is for 4th and 5th grad students to become engaged in the scientific process through the use of microscopes and to become proficient in the science standards. This project will enrich and supplement our standards-based science instruction in the 4th and 5th grades through hands-on science investigation and experimentation through the use of digital microscopes.

Denise Herrera, This Will Rogers Life:  Inspired by National Public Radio’s “This American Life,” students will record oral histories and publish these stories.  This grant will enable the school to purchase four digital recorders, four microphones and headphones.

Darwin Mendinueto, The Vocabulary Connection: Vocabulary development is essential for students to successfully read texts at progressive grade levels.  Second language learners, resource students, general education students and gifted students benefit through constant vocabulary building and oral language practice. Through purchasing and then implementing strategies to derive information from Longman dictionaries in the classroom, students will improve their writing skills.

Devon Smith, Hip Hop Poetry Slam: Students will learn about language arts standards; including poetry and using the Hip Hop music genre.  They will compare and contrast the classic and Hip Hop/Rap poets and the literary devices that they use.  Students will write their own poetry using these techniques.  The grant for this project will be used to purchase writing materials, music downloads, transportation to UCLA and a digital camera.           

ROOSEVELT

Catherine Handelman, High Interest Pleasure Reading: The goal of this project is to develop an interest in reading for emergent readers.  Students will gain core content knowledge, experience with different narratives. Students will explore and read a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction books for pleasure reading.  This grant will fund a book collection of high-interest books for young emergent readers.

SMASH

Kurt Holland, Seasonal Beach and Water Quality Monitoring:  This project is a long-term hands-on project that introduces middle school students to field science and lab methods.  With this grant students will use equipment to expand the scope of investigations following their return from the beach study site.  The supplies funded by this grant will support lab analysis at the school site.

WEBSTER

Stacy Harris, David Hockney-style Photo Collages:  As part of a four-week study on David Hockney, the students will study his photocollage called “Pearblossom Highway.”  Students will then create their own photocollages using technology.  The grant will allow the school to purchase a digital camera and camera supplies for the photocollage.

LINCOLN

Chon Lee, Enacting Shakespeare in the Classroom:  To help engage and foster student learning of Shakespearean prose and poetry in the classroom, this program is aimed at helping bring the scope and breadth of Shakespeare verbiage to life through drama and reader’s theatre.  This grant would aid in funding the materials (costumes) necessary to build the reader’s theatre drama performance program.

Amanda Levy Support Materials for 6th grade SDC/RSP History/English Classes: This grant will fund DVDs and reference materials to be used to support the students in the SDC/RSP History/English classes.  These resources will help the students gain a complete understanding of the material presented.

Eric Marcos, Handmade Abacus:  Students will each construct a working abacus.  This historical calculating-device will be used throughout the year.

Carol A. Wrabel, Classroom Science Library: The science library will advocate the importance of science, both literacy and scientific expertise.  Lit will help students practice their reading skills and allow students and teachers to stay current in science.  The grant will allow the creation of a classroom science library that will contain student and professional literature.

MALIBU HIGH

John Cary, Monitoring Water Quality:  Through studying and monitoring water quality students can make a significant impact on the quality of our watershed.  The grant will allow the purchase of equipment to monitor the quality of water.  It will also allow students to gain a better understanding of the physical, chemical and biological factors of water quality and the analytical procedures for their measurement.

OLYMPIC HIGH

Marcia Gecht, Olympic Mentoring Project:  The proposed Mentoring Project will provide students who are in need of support and assistance.  Mentors will be comprised of students of Olympic Highs who are leading productive and successful lives.  The mentors and students will meet weekly to discuss current issues and struggles while working toward the student’s goals for success.

SAMOHI

Amy Bisson, Social Studies Multi-Media Station: Students will be able to access visual and technological equipment to support and encourage utilization of technology for projects.  This grant will be used to create a multi-media station that would allow for teachers and students to utilized historical and political on-line exhibits’ the Smithsonian, House.gov. etc.  Teachers will also be able to initiate lessons designed to incorporate PowerPoint and access current events through podcasts.

Amy Bouse, Prismacolor – Drawings of Street Art on Paper, Not Walls: Many students are interested in graffiti and names drawn in distinctive styles commonly viewed in may public places.  This grant would purchase two sets of markers that would allow the teachers to acknowledge the influence of street art while encouraging students to participate in the artistic processes.

Luis O. Contreras, Mathematics Multimedia Presentations:  Colleges and universities are beginning to require students be knowledgeable about multimedia presentations. By purchasing a LCD projector, students in Algebra, Geometry, and pre-calculus will be able to create multimedia presentations.  The projector will interface with computers, dvd/vcr players, and speakers.  It will also replace the overhead projector and the need to use overhead transparencies.

Lisa Johnson, Dancing in Special Education:  In the special education “Block Class” the students are cognitively challenged.  They struggle with basic computation, reading comprehension and problem solving skills.  The art of dance and the pride of ballroom dancing will enhance partnership, community building, self-esteem, and sequencing skills in these young adults.  This grant will cover the cost of dance and Latin culture lessons for 6-10 students.

Benjamin Kay, SAMOHI’s “Window” Into the Sea:  This grant will help to purchase a saltwater chiller, filter, pump and protein chiller for a 240 gallon aquarium donated to the school’s marine Biology classroom.

Barbara Palilis, Circle of Friends: The goal of Circle of Friends is to build friendships between students with and without disabilities and to establish inclusion at Samohi.  Students throughout the campus gain understanding and learn acceptance of differences.  The grant will allow the school to replace a digital camera that will be used for taking pictures at each Circle of Friends event.

Tisha Reichle, Ain’t I a Woman: Global Voices in Women’s Literature:  Students will tour the world through short stories, poems, articles and essays while reflecting on what it means to be a woman from various cultural perspectives.  The grant will cover textbooks to supplement the existing novel units that will be the core of this course.

Mariam Shafiey, Raising Standards through Analysis and Presentations:  This project will enable students to achieve higher standards through analysis of their own work and other students by digitally taped presentations and competitions.  The project will also help students to use and acquire technical computer skills, and improve their communication and presentations.The grant will be used to purchase a digital camcorder.

William Wishart, Digital Diary:  The Digital Diary is an ongoing technology project which gives students the skills and tools to make personal digital documents.  Students use current software and digital audio/video equipment to document their lives. The grant will be used to purchase a DV camcorder and flash recorder.

ADULT EDUCATION

Deniz Oyman, Doorway to Citizenship: Doorway to Citizenship is a new distance-learning program designed to help eligible adult learners prepare to apply for U.S. Citizenship.  The program will provide DVDs and companion exercise books that students will check out and complete at home.  This grant will fund the companion exercise books that students will need in order to complete the written activities.
